Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva |
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has announced
tariffs on imports of goods from the United States.
The country announced this as a countermeasure to the US
tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.
In an interview with Radio Clube Clubado Para on Friday
local time, Brazilian President Lula announced the countermeasures.
He said that all forms of mutual cooperation will continue
in this regard.
The Brazilian president said, "If the US imposes
tariffs on steel imports from Brazil, we will respond commercially. As our
response, we will file a complaint with the World Trade Organization or impose
tariffs on products imported from there."
Earlier this week, President Donald Trump signed an
executive order imposing a 25 percent tariff on steel and aluminum imports.
This is expected to affect Brazil's steel sector.
Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alcomin said on Thursday
that trade in goods between Brazil and the United States is “balanced.”
He said foreign trade is a path of dialogue, understanding, and finding alternatives. That is what will be done.
